EMPOWER Coalition Announces Launch of

“Parents: You Matter” Program

New Program Designed to Increase Parents’

Understanding of Drug and Alcohol Issues

Community education program designed to increase parents’ understanding and confidence in preventing and addressing drug and alcohol issues. The multi-media training program aims to educate parents of teens and tweens about why kids use drugs and alcohol; what parents can do to protect their children, and tips on how to communicate with their kids, monitor their activities, how to spot drug/alcohol use and what a parent should do when they find it.

The program, called “Parents: You Matter”, was created by The Partnership at Drugfree.org. “Parents: You Matter” engages parents and caring adults through awareness-building presentations delivered at local businesses and civic organizations, schools and parent groups.  Presentations are free of charge, and are available to community groups in the Southern Hills region.

“I am excited to be offering this presentation and hope it spurs more requests for presentations throughout the Southern Hills.  The program provides information on alcohol/drug use and its impact on the adolescent brain. This is a dynamic program that will help parents/caregivers to feel confident to talk to the youth about drugs and alcohol.    As well as provide parents/caregivers with a number of tools and resources to not only prevent drug and alcohol use but to also intervene in the event the youth may be using. In order to make our community a healthy place to live we must all work towards helping our youth reach their potential.”

The presentation contains a number of videos, including public service announcements from The Partnership at Drugfree.org, first-person stories, and information from experts. Drug-specific educational modules are also offered to allow presenters to customize the program to local needs, offering parents the most relevant information about the risks of drugs to their teens.

To schedule a presentation in the Southern Hills please contact the EMPOWER Coalition of the Southern Hills at 745-3082.
